Hello, and welcome to the very first module of Becoming a Master Language Learner, Part 2: Overcoming the Intermediate Plateau. This course is intended to help high-beginner and low-intermediate language learners reach fluency by helping them overcome something called the “Intermediate Plateau.”

But what is the “Intermediate Plateau”, exactly? And why must one “overcome” it in order to reach fluency?

The Intermediate Plateau is a metaphor used to describe a common point in the process of language acquisition where the trajectory of one’s progress seems to become virtually flat, rather than steadily sloping upwards.

It's not like the beginner stages, where you seemingly learn new things every time you sit down for a learning session. Nor is it like the advanced stages, where learning feels easy, like you're just filling in gaps in your knowledge.

If you're stuck at the Intermediate Plateau, learning feels difficult and slow. You're not seeing easy, daily progress, and you don't feel competent enough yet to go out and make friends, read books, or watch movies comfortably.

Though most learners never reach the Intermediate Plateau, the ones that do reach it find it to be a dangerous place. If you're not careful, it's where your dream of reaching fluency can shrivel up and die. I've seen it happen myself, many times.

Fortunately, my ample experience with the Intermediate Plateau has helped me come up with a wide variety of principles, techniques, and strategies to overcome it. Together, these concepts can protect you from the perils of the plateau so that, rather than being the end of your language learning road, it's just another place you pass by on your way to eventually reaching fluency.

This course represents the culmination and combination of all of those concepts in one comprehensive package. Over the course of the next weeks and months, you will learn to apply all of these concepts to your target language so that this normally frustrating period in your linguistic development will be nothing more than a footnote in the story of your overall success as a language learner.

Don’t get me wrong; I’m not saying that the road ahead will be an easy one. Rather, I’m saying that if you take what you learn here and dutifully apply it to your own life, you will get past the intermediate plateau, and you will reach fluency.

You’ll have to put in the work (and a lot of it) over a long period of time. But I’ll be here to guide you.
